  1. Alphabets: In automata theory, an alphabet is a finite set of symbols. These symbols are used to construct strings. Alphabets are denoted typically by Σ. For example, an alphabet might be {0, 1}, which consists of the symbols 0 and 1.
  2. Strings: A string is a finite sequence of symbols chosen from an alphabet. Formally, a string over an alphabet Σ is defined as a finite sequence of symbols from Σ. For instance, if the alphabet is {0, 1}, then examples of strings include “0101”, “100”, “11”, etc.
  3. Languages: A language in the context of automata theory is a set of strings over a given alphabet. Languages can be finite or infinite. For instance, if our alphabet is {0, 1}, then examples of languages include:
    • The set of all strings containing only the symbol ‘0’.
    • The set of all strings containing an even number of ‘1’s.
    • The set of all strings where the number of ‘0’s is equal to the number of ‘1’s.

These basic concepts serve as the foundation for more complex discussions within automata theory, such as finite automata, regular expressions, context-free grammars, and Turing machines, which are used to model different levels of computational power and complexity.
