Floating-point representation is a method used in computing to represent real numbers with a fractional component. It’s based on the IEEE 754 standard, which defines formats for single-precision (32-bit) and double-precision (64-bit) floating-point numbers. Here’s an overview:

  • Components: A floating-point number consists of three components:
    1. Sign bit: Indicates the sign of the number (positive or negative).
    2. Exponent: Represents the magnitude of the number.
    3. Significand (Mantissa): Represents the precision or fractional part of the number.
  • IEEE 754 Format:
    • Single-precision (32-bit): 1 bit for sign, 8 bits for exponent, and 23 bits for significand.
    • Double-precision (64-bit): 1 bit for sign, 11 bits for exponent, and 52 bits for significand.
  • Normalization: The significand is normalized, meaning the binary point is adjusted to represent a value between 1.0 and 2.0 (or between -1.0 and -2.0 for negative numbers).
  • Exponent Bias: The exponent is biased to allow for both positive and negative exponents. In IEEE 754, the exponent bias for single-precision is 127, and for double-precision, it’s 1023.
  • Special Values: IEEE 754 defines special values such as positive and negative zero, positive and negative infinity, and NaN (Not a Number) to represent exceptional conditions in floating-point arithmetic.

Character Codes:

Character codes are numeric representations of characters used in computing to encode text data. There are several character encoding schemes, each assigning a unique numeric value to characters in a character set. Here are some common character encoding schemes:

  • ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange): ASCII is a widely used character encoding scheme that uses 7 bits to represent 128 characters, including uppercase and lowercase letters, digits, punctuation symbols, and control characters.
  • Extended ASCII: Extended ASCII extends the ASCII character set by using 8 bits to represent 256 characters. It includes additional characters such as accented letters, symbols, and special characters.
  • Unicode: Unicode is a universal character encoding standard that aims to represent every character in every language in a standardized manner. It uses variable-length encoding (UTF-8, UTF-16, UTF-32) to represent characters, allowing for the representation of a vast number of characters from different writing systems and languages.
  • UTF-8: UTF-8 is a variable-length encoding scheme for Unicode characters that uses 8-bit code units. It is backward compatible with ASCII, meaning ASCII characters are represented using a single byte, while other characters require multiple bytes.
  • UTF-16 and UTF-32: UTF-16 and UTF-32 are variable-length encoding schemes for Unicode characters that use 16-bit and 32-bit code units, respectively. They provide fixed-width encoding for all Unicode characters but may require more memory compared to UTF-8 for certain character sets.
